San Miguel
de Allende is located in the mountainous region of central Mexico.
As such, visitors should be prepared for their stay in San Miguel
with a pair (or two!) of good, comfortable walking shoes. Though
most everyday items can be purchased fairly easily in Mexico,
something that is difficult to attain are shoes in larger sizes.
Women's size 9 or larger and Men's size 10 or larger may be extremely
difficult to find here (or almost anywhere in Mexico.)

Even
in the warmest months (March through May) when the afternoons
can reach 90° F (33° C), the evenings can drop to 50°
F (15° C). It is advisable to bring at least a light sweater
or jacket for this time of year.
The rainy
season, which begins around the beginning of June, generally lasts
through the middle of October. When the rain falls, it can rain
quite heavily, but don't let this discourage you -- not only are
the days pleasantly cool, but by August the desert, which previously
only yielded cactus and thorn bushes, are now covered with wild
flowers and grass. It is truly a wondrous sight to see the transformation
of San Miguel de Allende. |
GETTING
THERE:
By Air:
San Miguel de Allende's nearest international airport is the Aeropuerto
del Bajio (BJX), in the city of Leon, located 110 km (about 70 miles
from San Miguel). Some travelers may find it difficult to get to San
Miguel by bus, as this involves taking a taxi to Leon's bus station
(about 20 minutes drive from the airport). Many visitors have found
it simpler to arrange airport pickup through one of the transportation
services, because the drivers are not only bilingual, but also are familiar
with San Miguel de Allende and can take you directly to the doorstep
of the your vacation rental.
These same companies
also can arrange to pick you up from Mexico City's Benito Juarez International
Airport (MEX). This is definitely worth pre-arranging, as getting from
the Airport to Mexico City's Terminal Norte (Bus Depot) can be a challenge.
We would be happy
to arrange your transportation to and from the airport.Buses to San
Miguel de Allende.
To/From
Mexico City:
It's a 4-hour trip to San Miguel from Mexico City's Terminal Norte,
on a first-class bus (with one stop in Querétaro). Primera Plus,
Satelite, ETN, and Omnibus de Mexico all have one to six deluxe buses
per day. Flecha Amarilla and Herradura de Plata have buses that leave
almost every half hour (most are first-class). Make sure that your bus
is a "directo". If you can't get a quick departure, catch
a bus to Querétaro and change buses there.
